Get To Know Me: Nerd Edition®

Not too long ago, I did a version of Get To Know Me: Geek Edition® which included an excerpt of a just finished paper for an upcoming conference. Well, two months have passed and I have successfully presented that paper; but I also moved on to the next paper (it seems all I've worked on lately is papers). I just finished writing that paper (you can take a breath and relax, I'm not including any of this paper on my blog), and it is due to the combined mental strain of solo-authoring multiple papers and the mind-numbing effects of sleep deprivation that accompanies a new child that I have not thought many deep theological thoughts lately.

Well, that's partially true. I've been preparing to teach a four-Sunday class at church on the Holy Spirit and I plan on putting those lessons up here, as well. But that's not until May, so in the meantime I will again entertain and stupefy with another in the Get to Know Me series. I now present the Nerd Edition®.

  1. I'm a engineer. I'm an engineer with an advanced degree. Enough said.

  2. I don't laugh at Dilbert, I sympathize with him.
    Dilbert or Euphrony

  3. I always have a pen in my shirt pocket. The subtext here is that I always wear a shirt with a pocket. Hey, as the saying goes, they're handy!

  4. Periodic Table tiesI own these lovely ties, and actually wear them.

  5. Periodic Table shirtI once owned a shirt exactly like this one, displaying the periodic table with the radioactive elements glowing in the dark. Mrs. E made me toss it on account of too many holes. Such a pity.

  6. For relaxation, I do crossword puzzles and Sudoku. I say for relaxation, because they really require little mental effort on my part. The Sudoku is all about number patterns, which come easily to me, and I can do the hardest ones in my head in around 15 minutes. As to crosswords, I do the New York Times puzzle in ink, and usually finish the whole thing. (The trick there is that puzzle authors have a bag of staples they always fall back on, and once you know those you can fill in a good part of most puzzles.)

  7. Despite #6 demonstrating my mental prowess, I can walk up to a person I've worked with every day for the last six years and forget their name. Pathetic, I know.

  8. I know how to put that little "circle R" ® symbol on my blog. It's not that hard, really.
The only possible redemption from nerd-dom I have is found in my wife (she'd never call herself cool, but at least she's not a nerd like me) and the fact that I seem to virtually hang out with some relatively cool bloggers. But even that is not enough to fully redeem one so nerdly as me.

Here's your opportunity, fellow nerds. Let's get it all out here. I'll let you cry on my virtual shoulder when the work bully makes fun of you. Share. I feel your pain.

I'm a former engineer, now a stay-at-home mom, and you should see my scrapbook attempts. They aren't awful, but they are SO symmetrical! Fancy for me is rounding the picture corners. When I really get crazy, I add a few stickers. :)

Two words: Battlestar Galactica.

I'm sorry, Cach, but no nerd points for Battlestar Galactica. Not when the show seems to feature lingerie models who sometimes forget the lingerie. Way too cool, now a days.

Nice try, though.

I would like to learn these afore mentioned number patterns.

Then I wouldn't have to mess up my Sudoku squares with all sorts of dots representing possible numbers and all sorts of crossed out dots representing "never minds."

I love Sudoku. I also love cross word puzzles. I used to work them before I went to bed. You're right, extremely relaxing. But I think if we ever raced on those things you'd beat me by like 4 days.

1. I'm glad you got rid of the periodic table shirt because, as a 16 year old when I met you, I totally judged you for it :)

2. I just spent the past 5 days attending a math seminar and was really excited to be in class again and be able to take notes (my notes always look awesome!!)and I was excited that I learned how to do math problems faster! So I'm also a dork, but as my boyfriend says people don't usually think of pretty girls as dorks - so I have that going for me.

3. I always have at least 3 calculators with me at all times...

So at least you married in to the right family... :)

Fancy, try this number pattern: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9. Sorry, sarcasm is a weakness of mine. I'm still waiting to see how, in Christ, this weakness becomes my strength.

Seriously, though, instead of trying to decide what a square can be, try to decide what it cannot be. Okay, now I've gone all Yoda on ya, so sorry again.

Carrie, I know you were duly impressed by my periodic table shirt. Such things are hard for a 16 year old girl to express when first meeting her sister's boyfriend.

It's funny, though; I didn't see you using a calculator when we played Taboo® a couple weeks ago. Were you hiding them, ashamed of you own personal dorkiness?

I WANT THOSE SHIRTS AND TIES. NOW.

lol at the battlestar galactica pot-shot.

Seth, both shirts and ties may be purchased through http://www.scienceteecher.com. They have periodic table stuff, physics stuff, math stuff, chemistry, biology, Einstein, M.C. Escher, etc.

FancyPants said...

See, Seth, the point is you have to know what those symbols mean to justify purchasing the articles of clothing.

(heh, heh, heh...)

Master Euphrony: mmmm....Practice sudoku, I will. Until student, her master, shall overcome! Ye-EH-es....

But the real question is...

Do you have a pocket protector to keep those shirts pristine when a pen leaks? Now that's how you really impress sisters-in-law-to-be.

Those ties are Delightful!

I'm sure I couldn't get one with just the symbol for Boron could I?

euphrony said...

Okay, HSC, I'm curious. Why boron?

Herbert S. Crotch said...

I have several and thank you for asking!

Fist and foremost, I find boron to be terribly underrated by the general public. Boron is an essential plant nutrient, although soil concentrations of > 200 ppm can cause marginal necrosis in leaves, and as an ultratrace mineral is necessary for the optimal health of animals, though its physiological role in animals is poorly understood.

Secondly, Boron could very well contribute to the end of global warming. In automobiles it has been proposed that by reacting water with the element, hydrogen could be produced to be burnt in an internal combustion engine or fed to a fuel cell to generate electricity. That is exciting stuff there!

Thirdly, and of little importance, I think having only one large symbol on a t-shirt might be more flattering for my generous frame. Just a large "B" on a black shirt might slim me down a bit.

Okay, that's it. You've made it official.
