Music Monday: Free Sara Groves

This is kind of the Late Edition for my contribution to Music Monday - I've been rather busy today.

Sara Groves' O Holy NightWho doesn't love free music? I know that I love getting free music, and hunt it down when I can. Well, this week I'm giving away a copy of Sara Groves' Christmas CD, O Holy Night. I reviewed the CD recently, which you can read here.

To have a chance at winning, just comment on this post and I'll randomly pick a winner.

Oh, by the way, I want to make this fun.
Now, I love Christmas music. I often find myself humming or singing a carol any time of the year. Therein lies a problem, though: what this means is that I can't get Christmas music out of my head. Every year, from Thanksgiving to New Years, the air waves are flooded with songs of nativity and Santa - and I begin to go insane (in a good way) with lyrics filling my head at all hours. So I have a coping mechanism - I change the lyrics.

A couple of examples:
"Walking in a winter wonderland" becomes "Walking in our winter underwear"
or
"Have yourself a merry little Christmas" becomes "Have yourself a Maury little Povich"

Now, I'm sure you're all calling for the men in white coats to come pick me up. Not without reason, either. But it helps me survive with a semblance of sanity through the year. And that brings me back to the making this contest fun - I know I'm not the only person who does this. When you comment, tell me what common song lyrics you intentionally change. It can be a Christmas song or any other song. Mrs. E changes the Third Day lyric "You are beautiful my sweet, sweet song" to "You are beautiful my sweet cell phone" (usually while holding up her phone and staring at it with reverence and amusement.

In Short
Tell me you want the CD (and why wouldn't you want this CD?). And tell me some funny lyric changes you make. And on Thursday I'll tell you who won.

Well, I'm something of a lyric purist, so I don't really change lyrics very often. However, today at the grocery store I sang, "Jingle Bells, Batman smells...." with my daughter. Does that count?

And, um, I don't have this cd, so throw my name in the pot. :-)

I would love this CD!

One time, I hit a bird with my car, and my friend and I then made up lyrics to the chorus of a song that was popular at the time, "I'm Like a Bird" by Nelly Furtado: "I killed a bird, it won't fly away. I don't know where it's home is, I don't know where it's head is." (I know, I know, that was terribly degenerate of me.) The original lyrics: "I'm like a bird, I'll only fly away. I don't know where my soul is, I don't know where my home is."

I also used to sing along to "Only Time" by Enya: "Who can say what she's saying? No one really knows, only Enya..." The original lyrics: "Who can say where the road goes, where the day flows, only time."

Fun times, fun times.

Oh I really would like this cd. =) and I have to agree with Kat. However, I have been known to change mainstream lyrics to be more...Biblical.

Exhibit 1. Bon Jovi's It's My life.
Original: "It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever"

My changes: "It's Your Life, It's now or never, we are gonna live forever"

I know, I know it's totally lame, but that was 8 years ago.

Oh, here's a Christmas one for you. "I'm dreaming of a warm, sunny Christmas...just like the ones I used to know."

K, I think "you are beautiful my sweet cell phone," is the best so far, but she already has this, right?

I really want this cd!!!!

We do this all the time, to whatever song is on or in our head.

"Jingle Bells" = "stinky boy, stinky boy, time to change your diaper...", and a classic in our family- "read a little book, drink a little milk, get down tonight!"

That CD would make a lovely addition to my ever growing collection of Christmas CDs!!! I rarely change lyrics myself, but my middle brother does - when he was little he had a play bow and arrow set and when we were on holiday Mum heard him singing "All things bright and beautiful" and she thought that was very sweet until she heard the next line "I think I'll kill that bird"!!!! Of course, he was only 7 or so and the arrow was plastic, but....!!!

Thanks, all, for your amusing lyrics. A winner will be announced tomorrow.

If Mrs. E were picking a favorite, it would be "read a little book, drink a little milk, get down tonight!" Wooo!

Great topic E! I've been busy the last couple of days so I'm just reading this. I also don't have the whole "O Holy Night" album and LOVE Sara Groves. I'm still laughing about "Have yourself a Maury little Povich". I like to change lyrics for fun. Since I listen to BNL's "BN for the Holidays", they actually DO include "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells" in their recording, which is great.

My wife and I have come to find that with ANY Mark Schultz song you can sing "I just use the same voice, and use the same tune, and every song sounds just the same, and it will make you cry". Try singing those lyrics to the chorus of "Walking Her Home", "When You Come Home", "Back In His Arms Again".

I do NOT change lyrics. That's like changing your grandmother's red velvet cake recipe while the woman is still alive!

That said, I would love this cd, because I love Christmas music.

Kevin, so true about the Mark Schultz songs.

TiA, you're too late. Sorry. How do you feel about changing the melody? Cause Sara does that on several of the classic carols.
