Musical Guilty Pleasure: The Polyphonic Spree

The Polyphonic Spree. They perform in robes. (Okay, now they perform in a pseudo-militaristic uniform.) Their lead singer, Tim DeLaughter, is a bit spastic and has a grating voice. But I still like listening to their music. Call me strange, but not before you listen to them yourself.

A group of 23 (more or less) eclectic musicians, playing something of a cross between classical, choral, jazz, rock, and random musical styles. Some harp, some violin, some guitar, some percussion, a little brass and a dancing choir. About as odd as it gets - but somehow still fun.

Enjoy!

Wow. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it.

How in the world did you find them?

Neat!

Looks like they are headed for the Baptismal. Also reminds me of Sufjan.

Have you listened to much Sufjan? I think you might like it if you like this.

Thanks for the intro!

I honestly can't remember where I found them. Maybe it was through listening to Yahoo's LaunchCast streaming music, and it came up randomly.

They've had some exposure: this song, "Light and Day" was featured on Scrubs and also in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". They even played at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in 2004.

The liken themselves back to groups like Electric Light Orchestra and other experimental rock bands. I've seen a video of a live concert they gave in Austin last year, and they played a nice cover of Chicago's "Saturday in the Park".

Seth, I've heard some Sufjan. Not really collected any, but I generally liked what I heard.

I don't have any of their CDs, but I watch them on YouTube every once in a while. I think I found out about them from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

What very interesting music to watch. I somehow felt happy and sunshiny. I agree with Kat, I never have seen anything like this before.

Well, hmmmm...I'm not sure what to say after that. Interesting, to say the least. What are you doing when you listen to this group? I'm not sure I could concentrate on anything else if their music was playing in my house. Thanks for opening my horizons.
